24.0°LSimpsons Amber Malt is the classic English roasted malt that delivers deep toasty biscuit, bread crust, and a hint of nuts. We're on the lower rungs of the roasted malt ladder, right between biscuit and brown. Amber brings pronounced, firm, loud toast - like we still have great toast but are glad we didn't leave it in the toaster any longer.
Direct to actual darker beers - NOT a "malt backbone" for IPA and lighter beers - the "toast" descriptor will compete with or override softer flavors in lighter beers or delicate hop notes. Step a rung down to biscuit or dark Munich for "backbone" purposes on hop-forward beers or beers attempting to enable lighter malts to shine.
Historically, this is the malt that gave old-school English milds and brown ales their signature flavor long before crystal malts took over. Today it’s still the go-to when you want that authentic British pub-ale backbone in a brown, porter, or ESB. Imparts a deep amber color and will darken quickly in higher amounts >10% grist.
Why we love it:
- "Perfect toast! Not hints of toast. Not burnt. Toast."
- Signature ingredient in a cozy English pub: brown, porter, ESB, etc.
- Be intentional with usage - this malt starts talking back quickly
Malt details:
Simpsons is total barmy about barley! The majority of grains are sourced from Scotland and northern England. The primary malthouse in Berwick-upon-Tweed, which in old Anglo-Saxon means Barley Town, mostly supplies Scottish whiskey distilleries. Brewing malts are focused at the Tivetshall malthouse in Norfolk county, England.
