20.0°LProximity ReGenMalt Red Malt (Prox Red) is a kilned specialty, not a crystal and not a roast. Proximity lists it for red hue, with malty sweetness and a hint of toffee. Typical color is about 18°L (guide range 15–25). It still has diastatic power, so it can take a real share of the grist.
Proximity ReGenMalt Red Malt brings a clean red hue and a light toffee-malt note without leaning on crystal. Kilned darker than Munich, still enzymatic. Ferments out clean. Color is the job. Flavor stays in the background.
Why we love it:
- "Red...malt? Why though?"
- Red in the glass from a San Luis Valley kilned malt, not a pinch of roast
- Enough enzyme to carry a real share of the bill, not just a coloring pinch
Flavor/Aroma
- Malt sweetness, light toffee
- Bread-crust malt, not caramel candy and not coffee
Beer Interplay
Pushes the beer red to copper depending on how much you use and how strong the beer is
- Adds malt depth without the stewed-sugar body of crystal or the dryness of biscuit
- This is barley. It will not do wheat's job on haze or head
Practical Usage
Built for beers that are supposed to look red: Irish red, American amber, red IPA, alt, a Vienna that needs more color than Vienna malt gives. A small cut, around 5–15%, shifts an amber. A larger share, up toward a third of the grist, is how the glass actually reads red. Bigger beers go brown sooner, so leave some pale in if you want the hue to stay red instead of copper-brown. Single infusion is fine. It is not a substitute for white wheat, and it is not a roasted malt.
