What a dumb name. DD-B.S. was created to help connect more dots from brewing concepts to application and offer completely customizable ingredient selection TO THE OUNCE!!!
We understand that homebrewers are much like the beer they brew. They come in many shapes and sizes: some just want to make beer while drinking beer. There's the artists and the scientists. I sure miss the malt munchers at the store. It is very sad in our modern world how malt munchers are a dying breed- running out of physical homebrew store options. We want to offer a grounded, focused experience online to make the most of this sad situation.
Our goal is provide competition-ready recipes for every BJCP style (Beer Judge Certification Program) - the program that defines historic styles. Each recipe is fully supported with outside sources so that modifications can be made with confidence - isolated from Reddit noise but open to scrutiny. Recipes are not sacred. They are subject to opinion. Ingredients and water selection with intentional controls and processes are what actually make good beer. "Competition-ready" was inspired by a common complaint by beer judges at small, local competitions: not that a beer is bad, but it's not meeting the defined criteria of the style they're submitted to.
And let's simplify things a bit. When you buy a bouquet of flowers, do you select each flower that goes into it? You could. We're making an effort to group hops together much like a bouquet so you don't get lost in the weeds of running down every last hop: tropical-berry, citrus-pineapple, piney-floral, floral-earthy, etc.
We're not here for your wife to buy you a cheap, subpar starter kit. While that's kind and lovely, we believe brewing with intention, including utilizing functional, quality equipment - which can be as simple as brew in a bag - is essential to gaining the most from the experience.
That's a lot of we, perhaps a royal we, but who am I? Jeff Bart, Chief Executive Beer Drinker at Double Dank Brewing Supply has more than 10 years of brewing and beer industry experience, in earth years. He has worked in homebrew retail (where he ate an extensive amount of grain), homebrewing in both Africa and America, operations in the Denver craft beer scene, and aging and lagering at the Coors brewery in Golden. He is a Recognized BJCP judge and completed the Certificate in Applied Craft Brewing at Regis University. But most of all, has an interest and appreciation for good beer and the oddities of specific styles and trends.
We started this because we love beer — the making of it, the sharing of it, and the endless rabbit hole of trying to nail that perfect pint. Whether you’re chasing a gold medal at your local homebrew competition or just want a reliable weekend IPA, we’re here for all of it.
