Golden Promise is a Scottish heritage variety and floor-malted by Simpsons. It’s known for a sweet, clean, robust malt character that gives excellent body and mouthfeel even in lower-gravity beers. Many brewers treat it as the Scottish counterpart and frequent alternative to Maris Otter.

Preference is mostly personal and style-dependent; a lot of modern pale ale and IPA brewers prefer Golden Promise for the way it lets hops pop while still delivering solid malt depth.

Compared to Pilsner malt

Not really interchangeable if you’re aiming for a traditional, clean, crisp Pilsner or lager. Pilsner malt is much more neutral and delicate. Golden Promise brings sweeter, honeyed, and biscuity character that will push the beer in a more malt-forward, ale-like direction. You can use it in lighter styles for extra body and complexity, but expect a noticeably different beer than one built on a true Pilsner base.

Simpsons is total barmy about barley! The majority of grains are sourced from Scotland and northern England. The primary malthouse in Berwick-upon-Tweed, which in old Anglo-Saxon means Barley Town, mostly supplies Scottish whiskey distilleries. Brewing malts are focused at the Tivetshall malthouse in Norfolk county, England.
