A Belgian strong ale strain that’s well-suited for higher-gravity beers. BE-256 produces a mix of fruity esters and spicy/phenolic notes, making it a solid choice for Tripels, Belgian Golden Strong Ales, and other strong Belgian styles.

Best For

Belgian Tripels, Golden Strong Ales, and other high-gravity Belgian beers where you want that classic combination of fruit and spice.

Hard Specs

  • Attenuation: 82–88%+ (very high)
  • Flocculation: Medium
  • Temperature Range: 64–77°F (ideal 68–73°F)
  • Alcohol Tolerance: Up to 11% ABV

Flavor & Behavior

BE-256 gives you a blend of fruity esters along with some spicy and phenolic character. It tends to ferment out quite dry due to its high attenuation, which works well for strong Belgian styles but can sometimes leave beers a bit thin if the recipe isn’t built to handle it. Generally cleaner than some of the more aggressive Belgian strains, but still brings enough character to feel authentic to the style.

In Practice

This is a reliable dry option when you want to brew strong Belgian beers without going liquid. It handles higher gravity well and gives you that signature Belgian fruit + spice balance. Just be mindful that its high attenuation means you’ll want enough malt backbone in the recipe so the beer doesn’t come out too dry or thin.

Pitching & Rehydration

This is a reliable dry option when you want to brew strong Belgian beers without going liquid. It handles higher gravity reasonably well and gives you that signature Belgian fruit + spice balance. For stronger Tripels and Quads (especially above 1.080), consider making a small starter or pitching two sachets to give the yeast the best chance of performing cleanly without stress.
