Storytime

East Kent Goldings is one of the most classic English hops, grown in the Kent region for centuries. It’s the traditional hop used in English bitters and pale ales, bringing a refined floral, earthy, and spicy character with subtle honey and marmalade notes. Carries a balanced, old-school charm that has made it a staple in British brewing for generations. It’s the kind of hop that feels right at home in a proper pint.

Practical Use

Goldings is mainly used for aroma, though it can contribute some bitterness in traditional styles. It performs best in late boil and whirlpool additions, where it adds its signature floral, earthy, and spicy notes. Because it’s relatively delicate, it shines in styles that let it breathe - English bitters, pale ales, porters, and more traditional or sessionable beers.

Not common to dry hop with. But if you were, 1–2.5 oz total in 5 gallons is usually plenty. It doesn’t need heavy rates, and going too hard can make the earthy and herbal notes feel a bit rough. It tends to work best when used with restraint.

Brew day tip: It’s the classic choice for English-style bitters and pale ales. It can also add nice floral and spicy complexity to porters or even lighter modern IPAs when used alongside fruitier hops.
