Storytime
BRU-1 is a newer American hop developed by the Hop Breeding Company and released around 2019. It stands out for its very bold, clean pineapple character, often with supporting notes of mango and citrus. While it shares some tropical DNA with hops like Citra and Mosaic, BRU-1 tends to be more pineapple-forward and can feel brighter and more singular in its fruit expression. It’s become popular in hazy IPAs when brewers want a big, distinct tropical punch.

Practical Use
BRU-1 is mainly used for aroma and flavor. It performs well in late boil, whirlpool, and dry hopping, where it delivers strong pineapple and tropical character. Because it’s quite potent, it can easily dominate a beer if used too heavily. Most people find 2–4 oz total in 5 gallons works well for solid impact. Going heavier can make the pineapple note feel heavy or artificial, so it usually performs best when it has some breathing room alongside other hops.
Brew day tip: It pairs especially well with Citra, Mosaic, or Galaxy when you want to push big, layered tropical fruit. It can also stand on its own in simpler hazy recipes if you’re looking for a strong pineapple-forward profile.
