170.0°LSimpsons Brown Malt delivers roasted biscuit, light roast coffee, roasted nuts, and some chocolate character, imparting warm brown color. This is the malt that gives traditional English brown ales, milds, porters, and old ales that signature pub malt character — toasty, complex, and satisfying.
About halfway up the roasted malt ladder, our biscuit and toast descriptors are now firmly roasted biscuit or toast and light coffee. This is one of the last steps before entering dark roasted malt, which bring more bitterness and roast.
Recommended use up to 10% of grist for deep malt complexity without harsh roast/burnt character. This is the warming character found in brown beers and darker, particularly English styles seeking pub-style maltiness.
Why we love it:
- "Roight then. Makes a brown ale taste like a brown ale should. Proper beauty, innit?"
- Roasty and toasty at the same time, with some light roast coffee
- Delivers robust, deep malt character to browns, milds, porters, and old ales
Malt details:
Simpsons is total barmy about barley! The majority of grains are sourced from Scotland and northern England. The primary malthouse in Berwick-upon-Tweed, which in old Anglo-Saxon means Barley Town, mostly supplies Scottish whiskey distilleries. Brewing malts are focused at the Tivetshall malthouse in Norfolk county, England.
