Root Shoot Genie Pilsner is regeneratively grown, and award-winning (including Best in Show Pilsen Malt at the Craft Maltsters Guild Malt Cup). A strong everyday Pilsner base that still has a little more personality than commodity options.

Made from LCS Genie 2-row spring barley grown and malted on Root Shoot’s regenerative farms on the northern Colorado Front Range. It’s the lighter-kilned sibling of their Genie Pale - dialed for crisp, straw-forward character while still carrying a bit more bready depth than a completely neutral continental Pilsner.

Flavor & Aroma

  • Light, clean, and crisp with clear straw and soft bready notes
  • Subtle grain sweetness that stays restrained
  • Cleaner and less honeyed/toasty than Root Shoot’s Genie Pale

Beer Interplay

  • Provides a solid, enzyme-rich base that converts easily and stays pale
  • Adds just enough malt presence and body to keep the beer from tasting thin without getting in the way of hops or delicate lager character
  • Performs cleanly in traditional lagers or any style's base malt

When to use it

Use it as the primary base malt (up to 100%) for German-style Pilsners, Helles, Kölsch, light lagers, clear or hazy IPAs, Belgians, or any beer where you want pale color and a clean but not completely blank canvas.

Compared to a classic German or Czech Pilsner malt, it sits in the same light, crisp lane but brings a touch more bready character from the Genie barley and terroir from northern Colorado growing conditions. Compared to Root Shoot’s own Genie Pale, it’s noticeably cleaner and less honeyed - the version you want when the malt should support rather than lead.
