BJCP Approach to Recipes

Every recipe here starts the same way I design my own beers: with a solid classic baseline, then open for whatever wild direction you want to take it.

We organize by Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) style categories — the same framework used in beer competitions. As a BJCP judge I can tell you the #1 complaint isn’t “this beer sucks.” It’s “this beer is good but it doesn’t taste like the style it entered.” That disconnect is exactly why we use these guidelines: they give us a shared language and measurable targets so you can understand what makes a West Coast IPA taste like a West Coast IPA… or decide to flip the script completely.

Flavor and aroma always come first. Each style page gives you the real story of the beer, what it should taste like in the glass, the practical 5-gallon recipe, and clear explanations of why each ingredient does what it does. Technical numbers and BJCP guidelines are there if you want them (linked, never shoved in your face).

This is goal-based brewing, not rules-based. Start with the classic, then tweak with confidence. Every recipe is written so you can see the impact of your changes instead of guessing.

What “competition-ready” actually means here:

  • Built to real BJCP flavor profiles and cross-checked against classic commercial examples
  • Repeatable 5-gallon batches you can actually brew at home
  • Practical explanations of the why behind every ingredient
  • Easy, logical modification paths so tinkerers can go nuts

These are living recipes. We brew them, we update them when we (or you) learn something new, and comments stay wide open — drop your mods, your disasters, your “holy shit that worked” moments.

Reality checkpoint: Change the defaults and the beer changes. Newton’s third law still applies in the garage.

What if you IDGAF about any of that and just want a beer kit? Hell yeah. Grab one and go make something great. That’s the whole point.

Our Approach to Recipes

Every recipe on this site is built the same way: goal-based, competition-ready, and fun to brew.

We organize everything by BJCP style (Beer Judge Certification Program), but we focus on flavor and aroma first — not numbers on a sheet. Each recipe is designed to hit the classic character of the style (or modern take) while giving you clear, practical guidance on why each ingredient is there and what it does in the glass.

If you’re not chasing medals (most people aren’t), think of this as goal-based brewing. Tell us what you want the beer to taste like and we’ll help you get there. The recipes are written so you can make smart tweaks with confidence, not guesswork.

What “competition ready” actually means here:

  • We build to real BJCP parameters and flavor descriptors
  • We use trusted sources and cross-check against classic commercial examples
  • Every recipe is 5 gallons and designed to be repeatable
  • We offer practical, not overly technical, explanations

A few important expectations:

  • These are living recipes. We update them as we learn and as styles evolve. Comments are open — tell us what worked and what didn’t!
  • Make simple, expected changes easily on the recipe pages.
  • Search ingredients to build your own or make -unexpected- changes to defaults.
  • Every recipe links to a Brewers Friend calculator if you want to look at the cool numbers or see the impact of your modifications.

Reality checkpoint: Changing the default numbers will change the outcome of the beer, adhering to Newton's third law.

What if IDGAF about any of that I just want to buy a beer kit? Perfect. Enjoy brewing a classic beer style!
